Experience & Activities

Tony has management experience in Defence and commercial aviation and is a subject matter expert in the application and associated behaviours pertaining to positive deviance decision making. He holds a Master of Aviation Management degree (UoN, 2014) and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), (School of Psychology, UoN, 2020).

Tony’s doctoral thesis ‘Uncertain outcomes: Traversing the breach between innovation and violation in aviation maintenance explored positive deviance behaviours and decision making in aviation. This research focused on defining and understanding the causal decision factors relevant to decisions to deviate from approved procedures by aircraft maintenance personnel. It also sought to understand maintainer attitudes towards innovation and their perspectives on what constituted innovative violations.

Applying effective decision making techniques is not merely limited to aviation. Applying a capture, codify, and control approach to innovative decision making is just as applicable to many other domains, industries, and organisations. Through IU’s engagement Tony is able to ensure decision effectiveness is tailored to your business needs and required outcomes.
